Four questions worth asking
Availability is the first one. These decide whether your cat has a good week or a bad one.
Are there dogs on the same site?
Plenty of catteries share a yard with boarding kennels. A cat that is nervous around barking settles far better somewhere cat only.
Can I see the pen first?
Any cattery worth booking will say yes. Look for a sleeping area out of sight of other cats, and a run with room to move.
What vaccinations do you need, and by when?
Most want flu and enteritis done at least seven days before arrival. Check the date on the card before you book the holiday.
Can you give medication?
Tablets are usually fine. Insulin, or a cat who needs watching, is not something every cattery takes on. Say so when you ring.
Every cattery is licensed. Almost nobody shows the rating.
UK catteries are licensed by their local council under the Animal Welfare Regulations 2018, and every licence carries a rating from one to five stars. Councils publish them. Nobody puts them in one place.
